The Parliamentary Hearings “The legislative support for visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union” were held On May 19, 2010. They were organized by the Parliamentary Committee for European Integration in cooperation with the Public Initiative “Europe without Barriers”. On May 19, 2010, Parliamentary Committee for European Integration conducted Hearings on visa liberalisation in the premises of Committee on 3, Sadova street, Kyiv, Ukraine.

The head of the Committee Ambassador Borys Tarasyuk chaired the Hearings. In his introductory speech Amb. Tarasyuk has revealed essential elements of parliamentary dimension in the visa area, expressed political will to proceed with necessary legal changes regardless from current government-opposition conflicts.

 

The Roundtable discussion “EU-Ukraine Visa dialogue: Challenges and Prospects” was held on May 7, 2010 by public initiative “Europe without Barriers”, The Centre for Peace, Conversion and Foreign Policy of Ukraine (Kyiv) in cooperation with the European Policy Centre (EPC), Brussels, with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation (European program). The event was held in the EPC venue in Brussels, close to the EU institutions’ buildings.

The aim of public discussion in Brussels was to access the state of play in the EU-Ukraine visa dialogue and future steps towards ful visa liberalization. Organizers set a task to formulate relevant policy recommendation for the EU, Ukraine as well as for the other Eastern Partnership countries.

 

The officials from the relevant Directorates of the European Commission, representatives of the European Council, European Parliament, the leading experts on Justice and Home Affairs were involved in the public discussion Representatives of European Stability Initiative (ESI), EU Mission from Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Russia, Hungary, Armenia, and Azerbaijan took part.

 

The briefing “The EU Visa Code” was held on the 5th of May, 2010 in Uzhgorod, Ukraine. EWB and the regional branch of the National Institute for Strategic Studies in Uzhgorod held a briefing “The EU Visa Code” with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation. 
 

It was the first in a series of roundtables devoted to the launch of “Commented translation of the EU Visa Code” publication, where the methods and tools of the most effective use of Visa Code by Ukrainian citizens, were discussed.

At the same time, Oleksandr Sushko pointed out the progressive provisions of the Code that will simplify the visa application. In particular, the expert noted that the visa code reduced the number of categories of Schengen visa: Category B (transit) and C + D (with the one national transit) will not be issued more. Instead, together with visa the additional provision code introduces, which is critical for citizens of Ukraine who are working or studying in EU countries, using the long-term national visas of the member states. It is about the EU decision to equate long-term national visas of the Member States to have a residence permit tha the European Parliament approved on March 9, 2010.
